Tema de Michael Goddard (University of Salford) para a Mesa 2 – Novas Ontologias: Ritmos, Poéticas, Materialidades. 5 de agosto, das 13h às 15h30
This talk will examine the contemporary reinvention of the term Media Ecologiesin the work of Matthew Fuller and other authors, arguing that its provenance is less from Neil Postman’s post McLuhan Media Ecology Association and stems more from the work of Felix Guattari on both multiple ecologies, and multiple modes of media subjectivation. It therefore has a lot more in common with the current proliferation of new materialisms and post-human thought than the humanist tradition of the MEA. However, the insistence on both relations and modes of subjectivation in media ecologies, also distances them from contemporary Speculative Materialisms, at least in their object oriented ontology (OOO) forms, while remaining very engaged with all kinds of material things of the world. Through an engagement with existing media ecologies ranging from pirate radio and guerrilla television to modes of theoretical thought, it will argue that to really grasp the complex objects of media e cologies, it is necessary to understand them in the processual relational terms of ontogenesis, which are paradoxically much more concrete than merely ontological approaches to ‘the object’ can ever be.
