This paper considers the micro-logics of enclosure and transmission embodied by the envelope. By “micro-logics” I mean to suggest that pedestrian acts of enclosure and transmission are involved with knowing in important ways. And because this paper considers the seed packet as its exemplary kind of envelope, the knowledge in question is horticulture. Drawing on a reading of seed catalogs and the disciplinary history of botany and horticulture in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, I address the dynamic world of cultivated plants as something variously knowable.
